Feline Whelping Assistance

Feline Whelping, Or The Process Of A Cat Giving Birth To Kittens, Is Typically A Natural And Instinctual Process For Most Cats. However, There Are Situations Where Assistance May Be Necessary Or Helpful. If You Suspect That A Cat Needs Assistance During Labour And Delivery, It’s Important To Keep In Mind That You Should Consult With A Professional Who Has Experience With Cat Breeding. Here Are Some General Guidelines For Feline Whelping Assistance:

Preparation: Before The Due Date, Ensure That You Have A Clean, Quiet, And Comfortable Area Prepared For The Mother Cat To Give Birth. Provide A Nesting Box With Soft Bedding, And Make Sure It’s In A Location Where She Feels Safe And Secure.

Observation: Keep A Close Eye On The Pregnant Cat When She Is In Labour. Cats Usually Give Birth Unassisted, But You Should Be There To Monitor The Process. Signs Of Labour Include Restlessness, Panting, And Nesting Behaviour.

Assist With Kittens: If The Mother Is Having Trouble Delivering Kittens, You May Need To Step In. Make Sure Your Hands Are Clean And Gently Assist In Removing The Kittens From Their Amniotic Sacs. If The Mother Is Not Grooming Them, Use A Clean Cloth To Rub The Kittens And Stimulate Their Breathing.

Cord Cutting: If The Mother Doesn’t Chew Through The Umbilical Cord And The Placenta, You May Need To Do So Yourself. Use Sterile Scissors To Cut The Cord About An Inch From The Kitten’s Body And Tie It Off With Sterile Thread. Be Careful Not To Cut Too Close To The Kitten’s Body.

Placenta Removal: After Each Kitten Is Born, The Mother Should Clean And Ingest The Placenta. If She Doesn’t Do This, Remove The Placenta From The Area To Prevent Her From Ingesting Too Many. Too Many Placentas Can Cause Digestive Upset.

Comfort And Support: Offer Comfort And Support To The Mother Cat. She May Be Anxious Or Stressed During Labour, So Keep The Environment Calm And Quiet, And Reassure Her With Gentle Strokes And A Soothing Voice.

Veterinary Assistance: If You Encounter Any Complications, Such As A Kitten Stuck In The Birth Canal, Prolonged Labour With No Progress, Or Excessive Bleeding, Seek Immediate Veterinary Assistance. Do Not Attempt To Handle Serious Complications On Your Own.

It’s Crucial To Remember That Feline Whelping Can Be A Delicate Process, And Inexperienced Interference Can Lead To Harm. Always Consult With An Experienced Pet Care Centre. We Can Provide Guidance And Assistance When Needed To Ensure The Health And Well-Being Of The Mother Cat And Her Kittens.
